Joseph Constanty
Think of Joe Contanty as a fount of entrepreneurial ideas that morph into successful start-up companies. His business ventures include NextStep, Tangential Consulting Company, Wufantuan.com, Kickstarter.com, and The Unbelievable Testing Laboratory. While still a student at Pitt, Joe was already getting his feet wet in Asia with stints at Beijing University and the University of Hong Kong, and after Pitt, at Taiwan Normal University before settling in Shanghai.
What was your most memorable experience at Pitt?
Pitt offered me amazing opportunities and experiences that have set me on a path of exploration. Pitt sent me to Beijing University and then Hong Kong University. It was the Pitt faculty and curiosity of the student body that encouraged me to discover new places and ideas, and build my own businesses. It is this combination of experiences that I most remember from Pitt.
What did you study at Pitt?
I graduated from the College of Arts and Science with three degrees: BS in Economics, Political Science, and Urban Planning.
What value does the Pitt Shanghai Club offer alumni?
The Shanghai Club is designed to foster new connections in this amazing city. It is our goal to create a bridge for Pitt alumni so they have a network on the ground that they can tap into for both professional and personal needs.
What is your career/job in China?
I have been building my own businesses for the past nine years in China. Currently I am the co-founder of The Unbelievable Testing Laboratory (www.theutlab.com). We create technology-driven casual footwear for global customers.
What is the one thing you miss about Pitt?
I miss those long study sessions at the Cathedral and the Hillman Library. Lots of good friends made there.
